KDSS and Rear Long Travel - GX470, GX460 and 5th Gen 4Runner Posted by Mark Hawley Owner Metal-tech 4x4 on Jan 8th 2024 Hello,I’m interested in the GX460 Rear Long Travel kits with the Radflo shocks, but I have a few questions. The description says that you can fit a shock with 11.5 inches of travel achieving 27.5” of wheel travel without a sway bar. How much travel can you achieve while with the KDSS sway bar? I understand that the Panhard bar makes contact with the KDSS ram if the shocks are longer than 25” at full extension even with the KDSS spacers. Do your lower links allow the KDSS system to clear the Panhard bar for a few more inches of droop? Answer: KDSS will always limit the long travel to its fixed travel reach. Retaining a sway bar with long travel, even on a non-KDSS truck like the same year 4Runner of your GX, that sway bar will limit the total reach of the long travel system.Q: How much travel can you achieve while with the KDSS sway bar?A: The KDSS is going to limit your travel almost like what it has now. The stock rear shocks are the true limit, so a bit of a longer shock will let it come down a little more. However, I do not know if the KDSS ram can take the droop loads as the limiting factor.Q: I understand that the Panhard bar makes contact with the KDSS ram if the shocks are longer than 25” at full extension, even with the KDSS spacers. Do your lower links allow the KDSS system to clear the Panhard bar for a few more inches of droop?A: Simple answer: no. The offset lower links will allow the axle housing to droop lower with the increased tube size used in built-up links. (Whole reason we invented the "Offset link", but it also has other excellent offroad gains) But the links only allow you to go further and do not move the sway bar in relation to the panhard bar.POSSIBLE solution - This is now uncharted territory for the combination of KDSS drop spacers and a sway bar leveling bracket at the axle. I say this as Metal-tech 4x4 will only advise on what we have actually, hands-on done, and tested. NEVER what "we read on the internet" or "know a guy". Too much of that on the forums and FB user groups!KDSS spacers do lower the sway bar points; this can be helpful, but yes, unless you modify the Panhard bar/mount, it will collide at full drop on the left side, where the two bars cross over each other. For years, people have been welding a taller mount on their axle end for the pivot point of the Panhard. You can now find premade weld-on kits for them made in the US and a number of the overseas-made versions being sold on Amazon, Ebay etc. This, combined with the KDSS lowering brackets, may generate the added clearance you would need. However, I would suggest being prepared for needing to add limiting straps if needed to keep the bars from binding. Facebook Email Print Twitter Pinterest
